“Oh,” I said softly in surprise the next morning after stepping out onto the front porch with my mug of tea.

It was just sunrise, the day after Marianne’s session with Striga. Autumn had fully claimed the year. The early parts of the day were growing colder now, so the heat of the ceramic mug in my hands was pleasantly warm against my chilly fingers. The boys and Xander were still asleep. In Xander’s case, I suspected, he’d be asleep for a long while. The lodge and the yard around it were quiet and still, though I knew that soon, they would bustle to life again.

I’d come to love this time of day, before I had to put on my brave face and be the woman the pack needed me to be. For ten or fifteen minutes, I was alone with my thoughts, allowed to be Felicity Jordan—mousy and quiet, shy, introspective— and there was no one around to demand anything more.

The last person I expected to find there on the front porch swing was Marianne, draped with a thin shawl.

She was still in her pajamas, with her hair uncurled and no make-up on. It was an unusual sight. Marianne had never been as painstakingly dedicated to appearing glamorous as my own mother, but she was always meticulously put-together. Barefaced and sleepily unkempt like this wasn’t her usual look. In her hands, she clutched a mug of her own.

“Oh,” she echoed when she saw me, looking just as shocked to see me as I was to see her. “Sorry. I’ll—” She started to rise from the swing.

“You don’t need to go,” I told her gently.

Frankly, I was just glad she was conscious and seemingly okay. Last I’d seen of her the night before, she’d been out cold, being passed into Tony’s arms like a sack of potatoes.

I gestured to the seat on the swing next to her. “Do you mind if I join you?”

She glanced from side to side, like she was searching for a hidden camera. I wondered if she’d ever even seen Punk’d.

“No, not at all,” she finally said quietly, lowering her gaze and scooting over on the swing to make room. “Please. That would be…nice.”

I sat down on the right side of the swing while Marianne took the far left. The space between us wasn’t more than few feet, but the unsettled history of our relationship made those feet feel like miles.

We sat in silence for a little while, sipping our tea and staring out across the front lawn. The vehicles of our allies and house guests lined the drive, all looking a little shabby compared to Striga’s pristine luxury Hummers and limousine. The wall around the lodge made me feel safer here now, but it was undeniably ugly.

Even just preparation for war had marred what had previously been a gorgeous view.

“I never thanked you properly, you know,” I said, after racking my brain for anything to say. Asking about her session with Striga felt too personal, but
